Reordering Invoice Line Items Using Drag and Drop
You can change the order of lines in an invoice and other sales and purchase documents by dragging and dropping, moving any line to any position in the list in a single move instead of one step at a time. This guide explains how to reorder lines, which documents support it, and what does and doesn’t change afterwards.
🛈
Note: Reordering is available only while creating or editing a document, and requires the permission to add or edit that document.

Steps to reorder lines
- Open the document in create or edit mode, such as a New Invoice or a New Purchase Invoice.
- Add the lines as usual. You need at least two lines for the drag handle to appear.
- Hover over the line you want to move, and you’ll find the drag handle (the vertical dots icon ⋮⋮) at the start of the line. Hovering over it shows the tooltip Drag to reorder.
- Click and hold the drag handle, then drag the line up or down to the position you want. An empty space shows where the line will be dropped.
- Drop the line; it snaps into its new position immediately, and the other lines move automatically, without reloading the page.
- Click Save to save the document with the new order.
🛈
Tip: You don’t need to move a line one step at a time; you can drag it directly from the bottom of the list to the top, or to any position in between.
Documents that support drag and drop
| Section | Documents |
|---|---|
| Sales | Sales Invoice, Sales Order, Estimate, Refund Receipt, Credit Note. |
| Purchases | Purchase Invoice, Purchase Order, Purchase Refund, Debit Note, Purchase Request, Quotation Request, Purchase Quotation. |

What changes after reordering?
| Item | What happens |
|---|---|
| Line order | The new order is saved with the document, and it appears in that order when you view, print or send it. |
| Line details | The line moves with all its details: the product, quantity, price, discount, tax, line notes, and the cost centers allocated to it. |
| Line numbering | Not affected; numbering stays sequential according to the displayed order. |
| Totals | Don’t change; the subtotal, discounts, taxes and total stay the same, because reordering doesn’t change line values. |
Rules
- Drag and drop is available only in the create or edit form; you can’t reorder lines from the document’s view page.
- If you leave the page without clicking Save, the new order isn’t saved.
- Drag and drop replaces the up and down arrows that moved a line one step at a time.
