What is the Difference Between Products and Services

Enerpize allows you to sell two types of items: products, which are physical items with an inventory quantity, and services, which are work you provide with no quantity. Understanding the difference between them determines how you manage your items and which screens and reports you’ll see.

Products

A physical item that you purchase, store, and sell. When selecting this type:

  • You can track its quantities and manage them as inventory units.
  • You can issue requisitions to record incoming and outgoing stock movements.
  • You can know the available balance at any time and monitor it through stocktaking and reports.

Examples: a shirt, a spare part, a raw material container.

Services

The work you provide to the client, which isn’t stored. When selecting this type:

  • Quantity isn’t tracked, and there’s no inventory balance.
  • You can specify a duration for the service.
  • You can use it in bookings and projects.

Examples: a consultation hour, an installation fee, a monthly subscription, a training session.

Determining What Your Business Offers

Before adding your items, determine what your business sells via the “Business Sales Nature” setting:

  1. Go to InventoryInventory & Products Settings.
  2. Open the Products Settings card, then go to “Default System Values” and scroll down to the “Inventory Item Types” section.
  3. Select what fits your business: Products Only, Services Only, or Both Services & Products.
  4. Click “Save.”

Important Notes

  • This setting controls what can be added to the inventory, and you can update it later without affecting existing items or records.
  • A single business may need both types together — a maintenance workshop that sells spare parts as products and repair labor as a service for example — in which case select “Both Services & Products.”
